White Light, Black Rain: The Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
So I was channel surfing this evening when I came across the HBO documentary called White Light, Black Rain: The Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I caught maybe the last 45 minutes of it, but those 45 minutes have been seared into my memory. This is an amazing documentary that’s worth watching if you have HBO or have a chance to rent/buy the DVD. I’ve always believed that nuclear warfare was bad, but this really drove it home.
But the thing I found about this documentary to be very profound and unlike other documentaries was there was really no good guy, nor were there any bad guys (at least I don’t think this documentary really made it seem that way). There were just victims and the aftermath.
A quote from one of the survivors touched me so deeply that I can still recite it almost verbatim: “There are two kinds of courage: the courage to die, and the courage to live. My sister had the courage to die, but I had the courage to live… Even if I would be alone, I still wanted to live my life.”
