Where I Write About My Conceding to the Evils of Social Media

So I joined Facebook yesterday.

I know. I couldn’t believe it either. It wasn’t until when I woke up this morning and realized what I’d done that I truly understood the consequences of my actions.

For a long time I’d been wary of social media. Yes, I’m a blogger. Yes, I’m a Flickrer. I had accepted other aspects of social media with the exception of the MySpace/Facebook realm. I suppose if you look at the core of its purpose, it’s basically a mini webpage about yourself. Only you have annoying ads to deal with and a clunky interface that makes it look like it’s truly customizable (even though it’s not)

I did join MySpace several years back. I can’t remember why, I must’ve been drunk and delirious or something. I never used it other than to visit friends who had their own MySpace accounts, but I remember truly hating the experience and vowing never to tread into the bowels of MySpace ever again.

At one point, having a MySpace was taboo if you were a web designer. I mean, that’s like using Front Page and saying you’re a web designer. Hehe.

But I think all that has changed now, especially with the leaps and bounds social media has advanced just in the past 2 or 3 years.

And then last week we had our first marketing team meeting and the subject of social media came up. We figured it was probably a good idea, especially seeing as how we’re an Internet marketing company, to jump on the social media bandwagon, if not for us then just for networking purposes. MySpace was a no since their system sucks horribly, but Linked In and Facebook were both viable options since they seem to be leading the pack right now (Facebook especially). Then my friend pretty much tipped the scale when she raved about how much she loved Facebook.

So yeah, social media here I come!
